Isabella Cruise has opened up about her low-key nuptials to Max Parker, admitting it was hard not to have dad Tom Cruise walk her down the aisle. The September wedding took place at London's Dorchester Hotel, with the guest list limited to just close friends. Bell's mom Nicole Kidman and Max's parents were also absent.
Their absence led to reports that Bella has a strained relationship with her mum and dad – but she dismissed that during a new interview with the Mail Online. "Of course we talk, they're my parents!" she reiterated.
Max's mother, Beverly Parker, was asked how she felt about missing the big day. "We didn't go, but we all knew about it. We stayed away, we didn't want a media circus," she said, when asked why she didn't attend.
"The pair of them are lovely," she said of the couple. "I'm very pleased for them both and they're very happy."
Beverly also revealed that she and her husband Lester are yet to meet Tom or Nicole, but added: "There's no need for that. At the end of the day, they're just people aren't they?"
Since finding love with IT consultant 29-year-old Max, Bella has shunned the Hollywood lifestyle. The couple have rejected financial support from her parents, and they live in a one-bedroom apartment in a converted terraced house, which they share with three other people.
Bella, who recently graduated from Delamar Academy of Make-Up and Hair in London, drives a modest Fiat 500, while Max goes to work by catching a bus and a train. Asked if his wife has detached herself from fame and fortune, Max said: "Yeah, you could say that. It's more of a weird situation for everyone else."
The couple are fiercely private – they refuse to reveal how they met or details of Max's proposal, although Max did admit he didn't ask Tom's permission to pop the question.
They are quite clearly very much in love though. "I'm very lucky," Bella giggled when asked about her new husband. The couple also addressed their plans to start a family. "I'm 23, so we'll see. I'm still a baby myself," Bella said, while Max ruled out rumours they are already expecting: "Not quite yet."
Sources previously told People magazine Tom, 53, was "totally fine" about missing his daughter's big day.
A source said: "Tom approves of Max and is totally, totally fine with it. None of the parents were invited, and Tom was totally cool with it. Tom did pay for the ceremony."
The insider added that Nicole, 58, was thrilled for her daughter: "Nicole is very happy for Bella. She, like all mothers, wants her child to be happy, and it surely seems Bella is very happy."
