Three questions with Wanda Sykes

Funny lady Wanda Sykes has made audiences laugh alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus in The New Adventures of Old Christine and Jennifer Lopez in Monster-in-Law. But now the mother-of-two is focusing on what she calls her “day job” – stand-up comedy.

We caught up with the star, 49, on the eve of the first Canadian stop of her North American tour to talk about life on the road.

Welcome back to Canada, Wanda! Are Canadian audiences different than others around the world?
Not really. They are very nice, of course. They come ready to have a good time and are excited. They get a kick out of jokes that I do about the U.S. [Laughs] They love that.

How do you keep from missing your four-year-old twins, Olivia and Lucas?
When I’m out doing a show or whatever I usually just go and come right back. I think the longest I’ve been gone since they’ve been born is maybe two weeks. But we keep in touch on Skype and the phone.

You’re celebrating quite a milestone birthday next year. What’s your secret to staying so youthful?
I’ve got good genes! But red wine. I love red wine!
