Kerry Washington on gay rumours: 'There’s nothing offensive about it'

Because she keeps her private life private and has played numerous lesbian characters on-screen, Kerry Washington’s sexuality has been subject to rumour and debate.

But the Scandal star says she was never bothered by any of the speculation. In an interview with The Advocate, she explains that she understands why people would try to fill in the gaps in her love life.

“I understand their frustration,” she said. “I like how people will post pictures of me with other women that I adore, hugging on red carpets, and say, ‘See?’”

She added: “I’ve never been bothered by the lesbian rumour. There’s nothing offensive about it, so there’s no reason to be offended.”

It should be noted that Kerry is not, in fact, gay. The actress married NFL football player Nnamdi Asomugha in a secret ceremony this past summer and is now pregnant with their first child.

Yet the mother-to-be says she supports marriage equality and has taken a stand against Russia’s anti-gay laws.

"When you buy into the cultural idea of what’s acceptable and unacceptable, you reinforce negative stereotypes and prejudices,” she said. "That wouldn’t work for me.”
