She’s a bubbly television host with a taste for adventure, but the events that led Kylie Flavell to host the cooking series When Patrick Met Kylie are equally rom-com-ready as each episode’s adventures throughout Italy.
“I love films and I watch them and think, well, why couldn’t it happen?” says Kylie. We sat down with the free-spirited Australian to discover how a big risk helped her land her dolce vita.
Four years ago Kylie followed her heart – and tastebuds – to Italy, leaving her job as a magazine editor in Australia behind. With plans already in motion to televise her experiences learning to cook from the locals, Kylie stumbled across a video of British lawyer-turned-chef Patrick Drake online and invited him to join her.
“If you want to live a life that’s not ordinary, then you’ve got to take some risks,” she says. Patrick decided to fly to Italy and take her up on her offer. On each half-hour episode, the co-hosts whisk viewers away to a different Italian city, discovering new ingredients and traditional dishes along the way.
Not only did her leap of faith lead her to her dream job, but true romance as well. Kylie says that she and Patrick fell in love throughout the course of filming.
It might sound like a charmed life, but Kylie believes that it’s difficult to see the opportunities in front of you when cynicism takes over. “It does happen to people. I think that if you’re a romantic person, then no matter what happens, you think, ‘Well this is all part of the story.’”
When Patrick Met Kylie airs weekends on TLN.
