Beyoncé and Jay-Z go vegan

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are temporarily going vegan, eliminating all meat and animal products from their diets until Christmas Day.

The rapper revealed the news via his Life + Times blog on Dec. 3, claiming that he and his superstar wife will be eating a plant and legume-based diet while abstaining from allanimal foodstuffs until Dec. 25.

"Psychologists have said it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. On the 22nd day, you've found the way," Jay explained.

"On December 3, one day before my 44th birthday, I will embark on a 22 Days challenge to go completely vegan, or as I prefer to call it, plant-based! This all began a few months back when a good friend and vegan challenged me to embrace a 'plant-based breakfast' every day. It was surprisingly easier on me than I thought."

The experience, however, may prove to be more challenging for birthday boy Jay (who turns 44 today!) than for Beyoncé, who is far more familiar with dieting. The 32-year-old singer famously went on the Master Cleanse (a liquid fast based on lemonade, maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper) to drop 20 pounds for her role in Dreamgirls in 2006.

Of course, veganism offers a more sustainable diet than just water and lemonade, but the couple aren’t committed to making any long-term changes just yet.

“I don't know what happens after Christmas. A semi-vegan, a full plant-based diet? Or just a spiritual and physical challenge? We'll see,” Jay wrote.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z join a slew of stars who practice vegan lifestyles, including Pamela Anderson, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morisette and Avril Lavigne (who lives a '90 per cent vegan lifestyle’).
