Getting married means making a lifelong commitment… to a dress. It means falling head over heels in love with one style, one colour, one single garment that will live on in photos for eternity. No pressure.
I like to think of myself as a fairly fashion-forward young lady. The day I met my fiancé Evan in 2006, I was wearing an oversized denim Kangol hat - I thought I looked like Janet Jackson, he thought I looked like Samuel L. Jackson. Either way, my fashion statement got me the man; now I have to choose the fashion statement that will make me the wife!
Desperate for a bridal sensei, I immediately turned to my friend and style expert, Jessica Mulroney. Not only was she a stunning bride at her wedding to my e Talk co-host Ben Mulroney, but she happens to be a part of the team responsible for bringing Kleinfeld’s to Canada! Because most of my Fridays are spent eating popcorn alone watching Say Yes to the Dress , when Jess told me Kleinfeld’s was opening at Hudson’s Bay, I couldn’t imagine looking anywhere else.
They have everything from structured ball gowns by Oscar De La Renta to fashion-forward runway looks by Naeem Khan to soft, bohemian styles by Canadian designers &ForLove. I know this because I tried them ALL. Seriously, if CSI investigated that bridal boutique, my DNA would be all over it.
It was at Kleinfeld’s where Jessica introduced me to the new man in my life, designer Mark Zunino. Not only are his wedding dresses some of the most sought after in the world, but he also specializes in custom gowns. He’s designed one-of-a-kind couture pieces for Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian and now… I’m excited to announce: Jessi Cruickshank!
Mark Zunino and I are collaborating on a custom wedding gown! I finally have something in common with Kim Kardashian!! So where do you begin when creating a wedding dress from scratch? My first stop was Mark’s L.A showroom where I tried on everything I could get my pasty freckled body into:
Next, Mark sketched feverishly as I described what I loved, what I hated and ultimately what I wanted to look like on my wedding day.
Finally, we designed a one-of-a-kind dress that is bridal but chic, soft but structured, traditional but unique and very, very Jessi. I would show it to you now but, sadly, my groom has the Internet, so you’ll all have to wait for Hello! magazine’s exclusive wedding spread this July!
And I can’t promise I wont wear it with a Kangol hat.
