Diary of the Week: RCYC fête and Candice Vs. Alison

By Amoryn Engel

It was an absolutely stunning night for cocktails as fashionable urbanites got a taste of what “island life” is like for members at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (RCYC). The “island experience” began as guests were ferried from the city to the historical club on the heritage “Kwasind” or “Hiawatha” boats. It goes without saying there are many royal connections at the RCYC. There have been several visits from royalty to the Club, the last one being in 2002 when HRH The Earl and Countess of Wessex, Prince Edward and Sophie, visited for the club’s 150th Jubilee. “Top Chef” Jonathan Goodyear provided a range of culinary creations including beef tartare, lobster bisque and fresh oysters! The evening ended with the club’s Quarter Master setting off a ceremonial canon at sunset. The cotton candy-coloured sky, complemented by sailboats and swans set against the skyline, was absolutely magnificent. A royally good time!

Wiggle room was in short supply as more than 300 bright lights packed into Malaparte at the TIFF Bell Lightbox to celebrate Candice and Alison Events Group's 5th anniversary. Candice Chan and Alison Slight, decked out in custom Greta Constantine gowns, threw an epic, two-part event that had everyone dancing their very fancy shoes off!

The theme was, well, themselves! It was all about Candice Versus Alison, who each designed an event space that was a pure reflection of their own aesthetic. Alison's space was open from 7 to 9pm, and featured lots of white, gold, greenery and a chic, sophisticated vibe. Lots of delicious hors d'oeuvres by Oliver & Bonacini were passed, and DJ Lapelle got the night off to an energetic start. At 9 pm, the outdoor part of the venue opened and the second part of the evening began. This was Candice's room - a more nightclub feel, with black, silver and hot magenta. I think all the guests would agree, everyone was a winner!
