Fans furious after interviewer asks Eugenie Bouchard to ‘give us a twirl’ at the Australian Open

Eugenie Bouchard's fans are sounding off on social media after a television presenter asked the Canadian tennis star to “give us a twirl” ahead of a match at the Australian Open this week. The moment occurred after Genie took to the court, when an older male presenter asked the Montreal native to show off her outfit – a pink skirt and top with neon-yellow straps.

"A twirl?” asked Genie, looking confused. “A twirl, like a pirouette, here we go,” the interviewer said, as the athlete obliged and spun around. She then laughed and buried her face in her hands.

During the post-match conference, the five-foot-10 star addressed the incident, saying it was "very unexpected."

"I don't know, an old guy asking you to twirl. It was funny," she said, unfazed.

But while the charming athlete seems to have taken the awkward moment in stride, fans are not letting the TV presenter's strange request slide so easily.

“Asking the queen regnant of Canadian tennis to twirl should be a Bootable offence [sic]” wrote one fan on Twitter along with the hashtag #GenieArmy, a moniker that fans use to describe themselves.

"I wonder if a male tennis player is ever been asked to twirl in an on-court interview? #GenieArmy” wrote another.

Referring to a tweet that she had posted the night before, in which Genie wrote that she loved Serena Williams' outfit (Serena was sporting a similar colour scheme of pink and yellow on Tuesday), the interviewer had asked the blond tennis player to spin around to show off her outfit for fans.

“Serena is good at her twirl. She does them all the time,” the 20-year-old tennis star told the presenter after her spin, and indeed, Serena is famous for giving fans a pirouette after she wins a match.

Genie dominated in her first match at the Australian Open this week, beating her opponent, Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, in just 54 minutes.
