First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day and is said to have spearheaded the modern environmentalist movement as we know it. Now, more than 192 countries around the world observe the holiday (April 22), with countless celebrities taking up the cause.
Judging by the never-ending list of famous supporters, going green has never looked so chic. From Jessica Alba to Leonardo DiCaprio, Hollywood is full of stars that make safeguarding our planet a priority.
“I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history — it is a moment for action,” wrote Prius-driving Leo in a statement last year, outlining his commitment to combatting global warming. “How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet."
The actor is in good company. Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett is an active member of the Who on Earth Cares campaign, in which she encourages her fellow Australians to pursue an environmentally friendly lifestyle. One of Hollywood’s most outspoken environmentalists, George Clooney, has been at the forefront of the highly politicized oil debate for years. In 2005, he founded Oil Change, a campaign that aims to end the United States’ dependence on foreign oil.
Still, other pioneering A-listers haven taken environmental matters into their own hands. Two years ago, Jessica Alba founded The Honest Company, which provides non-toxic, sustainable household and baby items to environmentally conscious families.
