Canada elects Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister

By Sarah Kelsey

When Justin Trudeau, son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, became the leader of the Liberal party, Canadians weren't sure what to think, and little could they have expected his record-breaking, vote-sweeping win. The 43-year-old's father led the country from 1980 to 1984, and his mother, Margaret Trudeau, is set to become the first Canadian who has been both wife and mother to a Prime Minister. Justin has solidified his family's place as the Great White North's greatest political dynasty

In total, Justin claimed 184 seats, with the liberals dominating races across Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. Speaking to crowds on Monday night (Oct. 19) alongside wife Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau, he thanked Canadians for giving him the decisive victory over Conservative leader Stephen Harper and NDP chief Thomas Mulcair.

"We beat fear with hope," he said. "We beat cynicism with hard work. We beat negative, divisive politics with a positive vision that brings Canadians together."

He gave thanks for the unwavering support of his family, his journalist and yoga instructor wife who is a champion of numerous causes, including the Because I Am A Girl campaign, and their three children – Xavier James, 8, Ella-Grace Margaret, 6, and 19-month-old Hadrien.

Canada's new leading lady beamed and put her hands to her heart as her husband spoke of his plans as Prime Minister. The pair met while co-hosting a charity event in 2003, and after months of playing phone tag the duo reconnected and went on to marry in 2005. The beautiful activist has since become the apple of Justin's eye.

On election night he posted a sweet message to Twitter just for her. It translates to: “Thank you my love (and, I should say, Sophie!) for all your door-knocking and the work you have done in this campaign."
