Pirelli mixed things up this year when selecting the famous faces to grace the pages of the 2016 edition of its famous calendar. Instead of featuring scantily clad models, the recently released anthology focuses on 13 women “of outstanding professional, social, cultural, sporting and artistic accomplishment.” Helping the calendar move in a different direction is all-star photographer Annie Leibovitz, who had the pleasure of shooting stars such as Amy Schumer, Serena Williams, Patti Smith, Yoko Ono and supermodel Natalia Vodianova.
“When Pirelli approached me, they said they wanted to make a departure from the past,” revealed Annie in a statement, sharing her appreciation of the calendar's new vision. “The goal was to be very straightforward. I wanted the pictures to show the women exactly as they are, with no pretense.”
Outspoken comedian Amy Schumer stripped down to her underwear for the shoot and was overjoyed by the outcome. The 34-year-old star shared her portrait on Instragram, captioned, “Beautiful, gross, strong, thin, fat, pretty, ugly, sexy, disgusting, flawless, woman. Thank you Annie Leibovitz!” The photographer admits that shooting the Trainwreck star “added some fun” to the calendar and, "It’s as if she didn’t get the memo saying that she could keep her clothes on.”
Tennis ace Serena Williams shows off her powerful physique in a graceful pose set against a grey backdrop. While Amy and Serena opted for minimal clothing, stars like author Fran Lebowitz and Yoko Ono showed off their signature styles, with the latter striking a pose in a tuxedo jacket, top hat and fish net stockings. Rocker Patti Smith is the picture of cool in black jeans, lace up boots and a black vest.
