Leonardo DiCaprio explains his brush with Lady Gaga at the Golden Globes

While there was no shortage of memorable moments at the 2016 Golden Globes, hawk-eyed viewers were particularly curious about Leonardo DiCaprio's reaction to Lady Gaga's award win. As the singer passed his table to accept the trophy for best actress in a miniseries, there seemed to be a very awkward encounter.

In a short clip that quickly went viral, Lady Gaga walked toward the stage to collect her award and brushed past a laughing Leonardo – who was caught pulling what seemed to be a startled expression at seeing the "Just Dance" hitmaker as she continued to make her way through the crowd.

However, the 41-year-old has now revealed what really happened during the humorous moment caught on-camera, and admitted he didn't realize Lady Gaga was walking past him.

"Oh lord – that's trending huh," he laughed when shown the video by Entertainment Tonight. "I just didn't know what was passing me, that's all!"

It proved to be a particularly exciting evening for the Titanic actor, who picked up the trophy for Best Actor following his great performance in The Revenant.

Leonardo, who plays real-life frontiersman Hugh Glass in the blockbuster, beat out fellow nominees Eddie Redmayne, Michael Fassbender, Will Smith and Bryan Cranston for the trophy.

To director Alejandro González Iñárritu, he added, "Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this journey with you. Your leadership, your vision, your acute attention to making every day so visceral and real for us – I've never had an experience like this in my entire life."

The actor then described co-star Tom Hardy as "a beast and unbelievable talent" before thanking his loved ones. "My parents, I love you dearly," said Leonardo. "My friends, you know who you are."
