Heartbroken Celine Dion unable to attend her brother Daniel's funeral

After attending a visitation for her brother Daniel Dion, Celine Dion was unable to attend his funeral. The singer was reportedly too heartbroken to face another farewell following the Jan. 22 funeral service for her beloved husband, René Angélil. Her three children are said to have joined her at home for a period of private mourning.

On Saturday (Jan. 23), the Dion family gathered at the Rajotte Charles Funeral Home in Repentigny, Que., to remember Daniel, who died from cancer at the age of 59. His death came only three days after René succumbed to throat cancer on Jan. 14.

Celine put on a brave face at her older sibling’s visitation but when the time came to attend his funeral, the singer was simply unable to garner the strength to do so. Daniel, who the family describes as “a gentle and reserved man of many talents,” leaves behind two children, two grandchildren and 13 brothers and sisters. He passed away at the Adhémar-Dion palliative care centre, which was named after his father.

It is understandable that the Canadian star stayed home from Monday’s service given that René’s visitation and subsequent funeral were the most difficult public appearances she’s ever experienced. The singer is used to having all eyes on her, but she has never had to step out to say goodbye to the love of her life.

Now, Celine will continue to grieve in private before attending a Celebration of Life for René on Feb. 3 in Las Vegas.
