7 things you need to know about Becky G

Rising star Becky G is on the fast track to stardom thanks to a string of singles and a guest spot on one of TV's biggest shows, Empire. Born Rebecca Gomez in Inglewood, California, the Mexican-American singer and actress set her sights on Hollywood at the age of nine and has never looked back. After making a name for herself on YouTube, Becky has gone on to rack up some impressive music and acting accolades, in addition to landing a coveted gig as a CoverGirl ambassador. Here, we break down seven things you need to know about this talented star.

YOUTUBE SENSATION

Following in the footsteps of Justin Beiber, Becky G found an early fan base on Youtube. She delighted fans with covers of some of music's hottest songs like Drake's "Take Care" and "Novacane" by Frank Ocean, but it was a special rendition of Kanye West and Jay Z's "Otis" that caught the attention of music producers. Since then, her collection of videos, including her own songs "Shower," "Lovin' So Hard" and "Break a Sweat," have been viewed more than 500 million times.

IDOLIZING JENNIFER LOPEZ

The Jennifer Lopez super fan paid tribute to her idol by recording "Becky From the Block," a nod to the American Idol judge's hit song "Jenny From the Block." When Jennifer heard about the song she was quick to lend her support to the young star. “I heard it and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s so cute.’ It was really adorable. Supporting another little Latina artist, for me, is a pleasure," the mom of two told Access Hollywood. She even agreed to make a cameo in the music video!

SHE'S A MONSTER

Well, not really, but she did sing the theme song "Problem (The Monster Remix)" from the 2012 animated flick Hotel Transylvania. Even though she shares a resemblance and last name with the film's star Selena Gomez, the two starlets are not related.

YOUNG LOVE

Like Selena, Becky has had a very public relationship with a fellow pop star. In early 2015, the singer and fellow star Austin Mahone confirmed their romance after teasing fans by posting loved-up pictures on their social media accounts. Sadly their relationship came to an end a few months later with Becky telling Seventeen magazine, "I was with someone who was really amazing and inspiring, and everything was right about us except the timing. We had so many dreams and aspirations before we started dating and you can't forget those. Honestly, it sucked really bad, but he's so awesome and there's no bad blood."

"I’m an easy, breezy, beautiful CoverGirl!" exclaimed the star after being announced as the beauty brand's latest ambassador. Speaking with People, Becky expressed her excitement over being able to encourage young girls to follow their dreams. “It’s so awesome that I get to share my story with my fans and with fans of CoverGirl. [Achieving your dreams] is a process, and you may not get it right every single time, but you can do it. That’s the whole message behind [#GirlsCan] — you’re capable of doing anything as long as you’re willing to put the time and effort into it.”

BUILDING AN EMPIRE

Becky plays Valentina in the current season of the smash hit Empire. "I love acting and I have yet to really pursue that until this opportunity came along and I felt in my gut that it was right and I just wanted to go for it," she told Entertainment Weekly about her juicy role.

ACTION STAR

It was announced in October 2015 that the actress landed the part of the yellow ranger in the upcoming film adaptation of Power Rangers. The 2017 flick co-stars Elizabeth Banks.
