From the moment Justin Trudeau and his family touched down in Washington they have received the warmest welcome from our American neighbours. After landing at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, the Canadians looked excited and eager to start their three-day state visit. Equally excited were President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, who welcomed the Trudeaus with open arms at the White House on Mar. 10.
The two leaders shared an embrace on the south lawn of the White House before an official welcome ceremony commenced with the playing of both “Oh Canada” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Barack Obama then took the podium to officially welcome Justin to Washington. “We just completed a very productive meeting although I regret to inform you that we still have not reached agreement on hockey,” joked the POTUS. He went on to note: “This visit reflects something that we Americans don’t always say enough and that is how much we value our great alliance and partnership with our friends up north.”
Politics aside, family is playing a large role in the state visit, with Justin sharing the experience with his beloved family, including wife Sophie and their three children, Xavier, 8, Ella-Grace, 7, and two-year-old Hadrien. The Trudueas and Obamas enjoyed friendly conversation and some laughs in the Oval Office, which Justin's youngest child capped off with a big high five for Mr. Obama.
Sophie’s time in the U.S. capital has already featured three dazzling outfits, all of which are by Canadian designers. For her visit to the White House, Sophie looked radiant in a botanical printed sheath dress by Lucian Matis. Close friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney, who worked closely with Sophie to create her memorable wardrobe, reveals to Hello! Canada how they decided on pieces for the trip. “Sophie is young and vibrant and that should be reflected in what she wears. What better way to make a splash at the White House? In Canadian designs no less!”
Prior to his one-on-one time with America’s First Family, Justin was the main attraction at Wednesday night’s Canada 2020 gala. There, the Canadian prime minister addressed the crowd before Toronto native The Weeknd took the stage for a special performance. Later, The singer publicly thanked Justin on Twitter, writing, “Thank you for inviting me to this historical evening. honor to witness this moment my friend and PM @JustinTrudeau.”
