Back in February, Ryan Reynolds made headlines when he surprised a young fan battling cancer with a private screening of his soon-to-be released action flick Deadpool. Now, the Canadian actor has shared the devastating news that his friend Connor McGrath passed away earlier this week.
"For three straight years, my friend, Connor McGrath drop-kicked cancer... Not sure how... Maybe the cancer cheated... But the fight came to an end two nights ago," wrote the actor on Facebook.
Ryan goes on to reveal the close friendship he formed with his young fan after being introduced to him through the Make-a-Wish Foundation. "I'm grateful I got to orbit Connor's world for a brief time. Grateful for the pages and pages of hilarious texts between us. Grateful to his parents for allowing Connor to spend time with a foul-mouthed child in the body of a 39 year old," wrote the star.
And while he was only able to share a rough cut of his superhero movie with the teen, Ryan admits, "I'd never felt luckier to get to be Wade Wilson."
The father-of-one, who is expecting a second child with wife Blake Lively, concluded his emotional tribute to Connor with an important call to action. "If you'd like to donate to The Make-A-Wish Foundation, I can pretty much guarantee, your money's going to a damn good place. These people do not suck. They are heroic. Full stop. http://makeawishna.ca/wishes/donate"
