Diary of the Week: Justin Trudeau's state dinner at Casa Loma, Joe Carter and more

Majestic Casa Loma was the perfect setting for a summer soirée fêting Mexico’s leader. Ahead of their Three Amigos summit in Ottawa with U.S. President Barack Obama, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto broke bread at a dinner in Toronto celebrating the friendship between the two countries. Also invited were VIPs from the worlds of politics, fashion and entertainment, who mingled in the castle grounds before dining in a chandelier-lit pavilion. Whether it was the Canadian food and wine, the sultry weather or the famous Trudeau charm, Peña Nieto was delighted to be making Mexico’s first state visit to Canada in six years. “You will find a friend in me,” he declared in his toast.

Stars like co-hosts George Lopez and Cedric the Entertainer, R&B singer JRDN and Alan Thicke rallied their support for beloved former Blue Jay Joe Carter at the after-party for his annual charity golf tournament. The baseball legend knocked it out of the park with this blowout bash, hosted at Toronto's chic Shangri-La hotel, which saw sports legends like Dan Marino, Devon White and Barry Larkin teaming up to raise money for Children's Aid Foundation's Joe Carter Family Support Fund and the Joe Carter School Endowment Fund, among others. The highlight of the evening came when Shaggy and Naughty By Nature brought the house down with tunes that had everyone on the dance floor.

Arbiter-of-cool Toufik Sarwa has long been throwing one of summer's most enticing parties, but this year his annual white fete turned pink as partygoers celebrated Canadian and gay pride. Diehard revelers and new faces alike donned their most flamboyant ensembles at his Yorkville mainstay Amber, where bottles were popping for guests like celebrity hairstylist Jie Matar and model Yasmin Warsame. From the marble-laden interior to the iconic banquets of the coveted patio, the entire rosy lot was tickled pink.
