Beyoncé super fan passes away days after surprise FaceTime with the singer

By Sarah Walker

Last week, Beyoncé made headlines when she surprised a teenage cancer patient by FaceTiming her while she was in the hospital. Now, it has sadly been confirmed that Ebony Banks passed away on Saturday, just days after she got to speak with her idol.

The Hollywood Reporterreports that Kimberly Smith, a spokeswoman for Ebony's school district, made the announcement shortly after Ebony lost her battle with stage four cancer. The teen's peers gathered to pay tribute to their friend during a candlelight vigil late Saturday night.

A brief clip of Ebony and the "Formation" singer's conversation was posted on Instagram. In the video, the teen, whose nickname is Ebob, can be heard telling the Single Ladies singer she loves her, to which Queen Bey responded, “I love you, too.”

Banks — who attends Alief Hastings High School in Houston, Texas — has spent most of her senior year at MD Anderson Cancer Center fighting a rare stage four cancer, according to KIAH, a local news station. Earlier this month, the school district held a special early graduation ceremony for Banks, whose nickname is “Ebob,” in the hospital. And as the ultimate graduation present, Banks’ friends and classmates created the hashtag #EBOBMEETSBEYONCE on social media so that she could meet with Beyoncé in an effort to help make one of her biggest dreams come true." "Beyonce is one of her idols. She admires her so much, so we're trying to put that on Twitter and Instagram to get Beyonce's attention," said Gutierrez. --------------------------------------------------God Bless you, Ebony! Fans only heard about the FaceTime meet-and-greet after a hashtag campaign started by Ebony’s friends went viral. The #EBOBMEETSBEYONCE comments were what caught the Lemonade performer’s attention.

Speaking to KTRK-TV about the campaign, one of Ebony’s friends Karina Gutierrez noted, “Beyoncé is one of her idols. She admires her so much, so we’re trying to put that on Twitter and Instagram to get Beyoncé’s attention.”

Cristal Depaz added, “We [have been trying] to make sure she has a smile on her face and to make her wishes come true.”

Due to her illness, Ebony spent the better part of her senior year in hospital. Earlier this month, her school even held a graduation ceremony just for her so she could receive her diploma.
