Charlie Hunnam reveals he eloped in Las Vegas at age 18

Fans may be surprised to learn that Charlie Hunnam was once a very young married man. The King Arthur star recently revealed that when he was just 18-years-old he married actress Katherine Towne on a whim in Las Vegas. The couple had only known each other for three weeks before saying “I do.”

While attending CinemaCon last month, the Sons of Anarchy star confessed in an interview that he “fell madly in love” with the then 20-year-old actress while auditioning for the 90’s classic teen drama Dawson’s Creek. “We met at a Dawson’s Creek audition, just as a side note for whoever might be interested in the full story,” he told the Associated Press.

Charlie further explained that the reason why he felt the need to rush down the aisle was due to his and Katherine’s fear of drifting apart. “In our 18-year-old minds, we thought, ‘What if we never see each other again? Let’s get married, and then we’ll have to see each other again, even if it’s just to get divorced,’” the actor confessed, adding that they felt the need to say their vows to one another before Charlie had to head home to England.

Even though the lovebirds were excited to be husband and wife at first, that bliss soon took a turn as the honeymoon phase ran its course. The Newcastle native described his time as a married man as “three terrible, painful, expensive years.” The duo officially called it quits back in 2002.

Although their relationship ended in divorce, the 37-year-old year-old actor was quick to point out one positive to come out of their rocky love story. "I got the cats at the end of it," he quipped. "It was a small victory."

Since Charlie’s short marriage, he has maintained a steady romance with his current girlfriend, jewelry designer Morgana McNelis. The two began dating in 2005, and the Crimson Peak star hopes their romance will continue to blossom in the years to come. "This is a girl I love very much and have spent the last 11 years of my life with and hope to spend the next 60 years," the star shared on a video online.

Charlie praised his girlfriend for her support both prior and post becoming a huge Hollywood star. "She has been my loyal and supportive partner long before I had any success or money……My girlfriend is one of the kindest, nicest, most virtuous people I have ever met," he said.
