Kerry Washington takes a stand against domestic violence with Purple Purse campaign

One of television’s most stylish stars, Kerry Washington, is using her love of fashion for a good cause.

The Scandal actress has teamed up with the Allstate Foundation to design a limited edition purple purse, with the proceeds benefitting victims of domestic violence.

“I’m very proud of the design of the purse,” Kerry told InStyle. “As someone who loves bags, I’m thrilled to wear it and honoured to own it.”

Describing the inspiration behind the design, Kerry said in a statement: “ Purple is the color of domestic violence awareness and a woman’s purse is a strong symbol of where she carries her power."

The Purple Purse program recognizes that abusers often use financial control to prevent women from leaving violent situations. It's aim is to make talking about domestic violence acceptable (even "fashionable"), and to help victims regain their independence.

“The goal is to give women the tools they need to stand on their own financially and get out of abusive situations," said Kerry.

Fans can be entered to win a daily drawing for one of Kerry’s purses by donating $10 to any organization in the crowd-funded Purple Purse Challenge campaign.

So far, the campaign has raised nearly $2.5 million.
