Five times Eva Mendes evoked Old Hollywood

By Clare Douglas

Since celebrating her milestone 40th birthday last year, Eva Mendes has embarked on her most exciting adventure to date – motherhood! The Miami native, who welcomed her first child, daughter Esmeralda, with boyfriend Ryan Gosling this past September, is relishing in her new role as a mom, telling Violet Grey that she opted not to hire a nanny because, “Part of being a mother at this early stage is the struggle of not being able to sleep, and not knowing what I'm doing, and really going through it with her and battling out those nights."

Esmeralda (named after the character in Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame) isn’t the only thing keeping Eva busy these days. The star has taken a break from acting to concentrate on fashion , specifically, her Eva Mendes Collection for New York & Company. The affordable line of floral tea-length dresses and retro inspired separates are a reflection of the actress’s own fiercely feminine-chic style. “I wanted to create my own line of beautiful, feminine clothes with a hint of the past ,” the vintage-store obsessed star has said.

For her 2014 Holiday Collection, Eva looked to Hollywood’s most glamorous women of the studio era for inspiration. “I came across these beautiful old photographs of movie stars being festive. Everything was so elegant and sparkly,” she tells Violet Grey, adding, “I want to make dresses that make women feel beautiful.”

Feeling and looking beautiful is something Eva has mastered on the red carpet. She's frequently snapped channeling the effortless sensuality of Sophia Loren and the limitless glamour of Elizabeth Taylor.
