By Nicole Carrington

Between strategic cutouts, mesh paneling and a reworking of the classic tux, Hollywood and fashion elite like Cara Delevingne, Carey Mulligan and Gwyneth Paltrow have taken basic black to a whole new level.

Cara made her way through the streets of London in an updated version of the famed YSL famed ‘Le Smoking’ two piece, pairing her tuxedo with a skinny tie, casual top knot and sexy caged pumps.

Ciara gave new meaning to the term “little black dress” at the premiere of TheLast Witch Hunter in a cutout halter dress by Solace London featuring an exaggerated keyhole and high centre slit.

Gwyneth and new mom Carey also opted for noir this week. Gwyneth attended La Mer’s 50th Anniversary of An Icon party in a banded Galvan jumpsuit with a plunging, mesh-panelled neckline. Carey stepped out at the NYC premiere of her latest flick, Suffragette – in which she stars alongside Oscar-winner Meryl Streep – in an ultra-feminine Alexander McQueen gown and ribbon-tie pumps.

Also in Alexander McQueen was Rachel Weisz, who stunned on the red carpet for The Lobster in a printed Alexander McQueen gown with a classic sweetheart neckline.

Brights also made a major impact this week, as Bond girl Naomie Harris, Jessica Chastain and Lady Gaga strutted their stuff in super colourful frocks. Naomie chose a striped multi-coloured Mary Katrantzou design at Sony Technology’s ‘Made for Bond’ event in London, while Jessica struck a pose in a floral Erdem dress at a Bergdorf Goodman event in New York. And the ever-unparalleled Gaga rocked a '60s-style shift dress by Jonathan Saunders, complete with a cherry red chapeau, retro sunnies and matching pumps for a brand new take on mod.
