Week’s Best Celebrity Style: Lupita Nyong'o, Kerry Washington, Cate Blanchett and more

By Ava Baccari

Killer head-to-toe style comes down to details – from a perfectly placed cut-out to a hemline that falls at exactly the right spot. It’s practically a science, and one that A-listers like Cate Blanchett, Kerry Washington and Lupita Nyong’o nail every single time they step out. This week, the style-savvy actresses turn their detail-oriented focus on ruffle accents that play up their feminine guiles.

Always a sartorial savant, Cate Blanchett donned an all-black Givenchy Resort 2017 skirt suit with a studded blazer fashionably draped over her shoulders and a pearl-encrusted ruffle cascading down the centre – the epitome of Parisian chic. Not too feminine and featuring an asymmetric neckline, the ensemble stayed true to Cate's ever-bold aesthetic with just the right amount of edge.

Lupita Nyong’o also proved that feminine doesn’t have to mean to girly. The star of The Jungle Book opted for a fitted, ballet-pink silk charmeuse Boss dress with a gently folded ruffle that cascaded into a pleated skirt. Strappy gunmetal sandals completed the ensemble and made for the perfect contrast to the delicate nature of the ballerina-inspired look.

Known for her varied style choices, Kerry Washington always brings some Old Hollywood glamour to red carpet dressing. This time, the Scandal star chose a black Giambattista Valli cocktail dress with a pretty yellow floral print and matching chiffon cape over her shoulder. Pro details? Her glossy pink lip and monochromatic SJP colour-block pumps. This is the stuff of maternity style #goals.

Fanciful ruffling also made its way onto Karlie Kloss (in colour-block Prabal Gurung), Lucy Hale (in a pretty Storets blouse), Freida Pinto (in sequinned Burberry) and fashion girl Caroline Issa (in a resort-inspired Hilfiger Collection shirt). Newcomer Bella Heathcote also showed some serious style chops in a gilded Alexander McQueen dress with cut-outs, sequins and a chiffon ruffled skirt – oh my, indeed!
