Glamour mixes with ballet and boho for fashionable finale

The Big Apple has served up a veritable melting pot of choices for wardrobes next spring/summer, with something for everyone. In the fashion extravaganza's closing days, star-studded audiences were treated to glittering metallic evening gowns, ballerina-wear, luxe hippy chic and uber-short mini dresses.

Designers struck gold this year with their metallic creations. German actress Diane Kruger looked on as Ralph Lauren showcased his platinum-hued evening gowns that flowed like molten metal while Badgley Mischka and bridal designer Reem Acra produced goddess-worthy numbers embellished with sequins and beads.

Young couturier-to-the-stars Zac Posen pulled out all the stops with a glittering gold creation that took up the width of the catwalk. Like Brit label Marchesa it was his thigh-high, red carpet-worthy numbers that are likely to be snapped up by leggy A-listers. Rising hemlines were a prominent feature at the shows and the New Yorker made the most of the trend using a variety of materials and patterns from hot fuchsia silk to an elegant chiffon polka dot affair.

Unsurprisingly "pretty" has been a buzzword for the spring collections with their romantic rose-detailing, intricate embroidery, floaty fabrics and stunning after-dark gowns. But that didn't exclude the comfort factor. Over at Michael Kors, models strutted the catwalks in comfy cashmere wrap-cardigans and tutu-pink tulle skirts in homage to the dance world. Vera Wang, meanwhile, continued the ballerina theme with her slate-grey leggings and knit cardigans.

One spring trend that refuses to go away is the boho look, reincarnated luxe-style by Brit designer Alice Temperley. Like her compatriot Matthew Williamson, her show was hippy heaven with a touch of glam. Animal prints featured strongly as did shorts while the collection Marc at Marc Jacobs also included an ethnic twist with some peasant-style patchwork frocks.
