Apart from being dug out for weddings hats are usually the preserve of royalty. But of late several high-profile ladies have joined Princess Mary - spotted wearing a Twenties-style bow shaped affair - in donning eye-catching head wear.

Bette Midler was bang on trend with a towering floral creation complete with enormous petals and stamens at a society lunch in New York.

Days earlier Kate Moss underlined her credentials as the leader of the fashion world, by pulling off the trickiest of headgear – a turban.

The covergirl struck gold with the metallic headpiece fashioned by celebrity milliner Stephen Jones, which she wore with a shimmering Grecian-inspired mini-dress to the Metropolitan Museum of Art gala. It certainly had an impact on one onlooker, who exclaimed: "Goddess!" as the Brit beauty passed by.

No less daring at the event was style chameleon Madonna. The queen of pop's teal-coloured hairpiece, described as "bunny ears" by design house Louis Vitton, provided the quirky finishing touch to an oufit that comprised a puffball mini and thigh-high boots.
