Take Five with...Tanya Kim: My TIFF Essentials

The stars have begun touching down in Toronto for the 40th annual film festival, and as the new co-host of City’s Entertainment City and Your World This Week (Rogers Digital Channel 1), Tanya Kim is ready to hit the ground running. For the last 14 years, the pop-culture pro has covered red carpets and movie sets all over the world. Now, she’s teaming up with new co-host Adam Wylde to bring viewers the latest from TIFF's prestigious premieres and candid conversations with some of the festival’s most famous talents.

“I’m super-stoked! It feels awesome,” she says. A familiar face to viewers, Tanya took some time off from TV following her tenure at etalk. She revealed to Hello! that time away from the camera has given her a fresh perspective and boundless excitement when it comes to the 10-day fest. “If everyone could experience that time off and afford to be able to do so, I highly recommend it,” says Tanya. “Life’s not as fun if you don’t have a minute to sit there and appreciate it.”

Here, the friendly host shares her must-have items and the must-see stars that will help to make this her best TIFF yet.

FESTIVAL FUEL
This is the Super Bowl of our industry! Besides water, mints and hand sanitizer, it’s important to have healthy snacks with you so that you can eat on the go. I’ll pack something that’s easy and won’t ruin your lipstick, like Vega snack bars.

SKIN SAVERS
I love Pai Skincare’s Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil. It keeps your skin smooth, supple and hydrated morning, noon and night. I can’t live without that stuff. The brand’s based in London, England and they’re just starting to come to Canada. A friend of mine introduced me to this stuff and I cannot live without it. I also love their Chamomile and Rosehip Calming Day Cream. I used to sunbathe all the time. Now, my dermatologist has me regularly using lots of SPF. For day, I’ll use L’Oreal Paris Silky Sheer BB SPF 50 on my face, which has a slight tint.

WALK THIS WAY
It takes a village! I’m working with a stylist and they’re helping to put together the looks and jewelry. The heels I’ll be wearing are actually a collection of my own that we’re going to be using a lot, courtesy of Browns Shoes. In terms of practicality, you want to make sure that you have gel pads in your shoes if you tend to get sore. I don’t personally use them, I just suffer through it with a smile. But I’ve heard those work wonders! I’ll carry flats for sure, to slip on when I’m running to and from places.

POWER DOWN
If there ever is downtime during the festival, I’ll enjoy a nice steaming cup of green tea. Also, daily workouts and meditation are really important for me. I know it sounds crazy, but if I can fit in a workout, I find that it actually helps to reboot the system. It’s a comforting, familiar thing that I do every day. If I can’t get to a ballet boot camp class at Barreworks, then I’ll sit and meditate. If you can do more than a minute that’s wonderful, but even a minute is good!

SEEING STARS
This year’s list of celebrities coming to TIFF is huge, and the great thing about the festival is that it gets bigger every year! I’m looking forward to seeing Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman. It’ll also be good to see Sandra Bullock, it feels like it’s been a while since we’ve seen her [in town]. I hope some of our favourite Canadians like Rachel McAdams come out as well. It’s always nice to see her and it’s like a reunion on the red carpet.
