Melanie Griffith covers up Antonio Banderas tattoo

Melanie Griffith has made her first public appearance since splitting from her husband of 18 years, Antonio Banderas.

The actress stepped out for the Taormina Film Festival in Italy this week wearing a leopard-print dress, but it was her new body art – or lack thereof – that got everybody talking.

The 56-year-old had used make-up to cover up her heart-shaped arm tattoo dedicated to Antonio. While the outline was still visible, the actor's name was hidden.

She had also moved her wedding ring to the middle finger on her left hand – two weeks after filing for divorce from 53-year-old Antonio.

As recently as last week, Melanie – daughter of Tippi Hedren – was still wearing her wedding band.

She filed for divorce from Antonio on 6 June, citing “irreconcilable differences’.

In a statement sent by their rep, the couple confirmed their split. “We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalise our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner, honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together.”

A source close to the actress said that the couple, who have a 17-year-old daughter Stella together – had been having marital problems for some time.

“The split is not something new and out of the blue – they have had issues for years,” the insider told People. “The fights and separations got to be too much.”
