‘It’s insane’: Sienna Miller speaks out on sexism in Hollywood

After taking time off to raise her two-year-old daughter, Marlowe, Sienna Miller is firmly back in the spotlight, appearing in two Oscar-nominated films – Foxcatcher and American Sniper.

However, the 33-year-old star admits that she had misgivings about returning to Hollywood. Speaking to Variety, Sienna says she took a break from acting because of the intense media scrutiny that surrounded her in her 20s, especially when it came to her relationship with Jude Law.

“It’s completely sexist. It’s completely imbalanced. It’s insane,” she says of the media pressures that women in the industry must learn to overcome.

The actress goes on to describe an incident with the New York Times in which the newspaper wrote two separate profiles within a week of each other – one about Jude and another about Sienna – but treated the nature of their relationship differently. According to the actress, Jude was described as a “fling” in her profile, whereas she was referred to as Jude's bona fide girlfriend in his.

As if I was promiscuous, and all the connotations that come with that word [fling],” she says.

"I’d been, not by choice, dissected by the media and exposed and all the things that really make it hard to be a good actor, or to be seen as characters, to disappear into something," Sienna explains. "I always had strong and pure intentions. But it was just being swallowed up by this tabloid animal."

One decade later, and the blond beauty seems to have overcome adversity with flying colours. Sienna is set to appear in an incredible eight projects in 2015, including films Unfinished Business opposite James Franco and Mississippi Grind opposite Ryan Reynolds.
