Emily Hampshire on drugstore beauty buys, designer dresses and Michelle Williams

By Nicole Carrington

In just twelve short months, actress Emily Hampshire has gone from girl next door to industry powerhouse . Following a starring role on CBC’s latest hit, Schitt’s Creek, Emily is now turning heads on the Syfy series 12 Monkeys in the role of Jennifer Goines – a character adapted from Brad Pitt's role in the film version, for which he won his first Golden Globe.

“I’m definitely doing something different,” the 33-year-old tells Hello!. “What I feel is interesting about Jennifer is that you're not sure if she's the smartest person in the room or just completely crazy . She’s a real wildcard for the show. You take her at face value, so I get to play this range – insane and incredibly smart.”

Although undoubtedly tiring – “I didn’t realize how exhausting it would be to play a crazy person all day long” – playing such a dynamic character has definitely been a rewarding experience for Emily.

Off screen, the brunette beauty's style is a mix of fashion-forward yet girly looks and sexier ensembles, and Emily is enjoying the perks of her newfound celebrity, especially when it comes to beauty. "I'm obsessed with products!" she says. "Somebody just sent me La Mer stuff, which I love. If somebody sends it to me, I’ll love La Mer, but I’m not going to buy $300 cream."

Fresh from wrapping 12 Monkeys' first season, Emily sat down with Hello! to chat about her biggest beauty obsessions, fashion favourites and what inspires her style.

Our readers are always interested in fashion and beauty as related to celebrity. How has your style changed over the years and has it been influenced by fame?
Well, first of all, I am always interested in reading about that in Hello! [laughs] My style has changed a lot in terms of the designers I get to wear now. For example, Roland Mouret – there was a dress that Scarlett Johansson wore at a premiere and I was like, “I want that to be my wedding dress!” At the time, it was not affordable to get a Roland Mouret dress, so I went to a tailor and said, “Make me that for my wedding!” Now, at the Syfy fresh party I'm wearing Roland Mouret! An actual Roland Mouret dress! It blows my mind. When you put something like that on you do feel the art in it and the craftsmanship and how well it’s made. Especially because I have this memory of my imitation Roland Mouret dress that did not feel like this feels! [laughs]

Whose style do you admire?
I think Michelle Williams. I love what she wears... Right now I’m very much into lady wear. But not all the way – film noir, as opposed to jeans and a t-shirt. I’m hesitating because I want to tell you that I got inspired by things happening to my character and all of these great experiences wardrobe-wise with Jennifer Goines that I never thought I would have, but I’m not allowed to say anything! Now [it’s] suddenly, “Oh, I want to wear Christian Louboutin shoes and Jimmy Choo!” That’s my new thing.

Are there any beauty products you’re in love with?
Mainstays are Yves St Laurent's Touche Eclat. You have to have that! And I am obsessed with all the Moroccan Oil products. I've been using their hair stuff for a while, but they have body stuff now. I was obsessed with the smell of it. Everyone said “your hair smells so good!” I was like, “I wish my body smelled this good!” [laughs] Then they came out with a body line, which… I mean, I don’t know if people are lying, but everyone says I smell good.

I’ve smelled it. It’s amazing.
It’s so good, right? I love that whole body line! I used to be really, really product crazy and use a ton of stuff on my skin. Now I find that my skin’s better with a simple CeraVe – that’s been brought to Canada now. They have it in Shoppers Drug Mart. It’s a simple Cetaphil kind of thing. I also use hyaluronic acid, it’s really the greatest moisturizer. And also… Oh my God, you’ve got me talking about products. [laughs] I’m going to go crazy! Nanoblur and the moisture boost serum…that whole counter of things by Indeed, those products are really reasonably priced but actually work. That moisture boost is amazing.
