Top 10 high street picks of the week: 'The Royals' rocker princess

By Ally Dean

Have you recently tuned in to the new E! television series, The Royals? Good, so have we. And while this monarchy-themed melodrama has inspired us to vacation in Monaco and use the term “baggsie” (instead of “dibs”), what we’re really lusting after is the fashion.

“The looks for this show are limitless,” says Rachel Walsh, the show’s lead costume designer. “It’s a mixture of cutting-edge contemporary for the younger characters, classic elegance for the older.”

Sure, would-be queen Elizabeth Hurley looks amazing in her form-fitting dresses (stately nod to Herve Leger), but the wardrobe to covet is the rock-princess, aristocrat-with-edge persona of Princess Eleanor (played by Alexandra Park). Think of her as the female interpretation of Prince Harry, circa his wilder days – only with seriously smeared eye makeup and a penchant for miniskirts.

“We call her our gothic fairy princess,” says Walsh, who drew inspiration for the character’s wardrobe from the It Girls who frequent London’s Shoreditch neighbourhood. “She’s grungy, urban and edgy.”

As with any style trendsetter, Princess Eleanor knows the irreverent charm of items found on the high street. “We’ll put [Alexandra] in Topshop, but it might be mixed with an Alexander McQueen piece. It’s that real eclectic quality. She’s the kind of girl you see and think, ‘I can achieve that look.’”

And achieve it we did. Scouring our own high street shops we found the best looks-for-less to channel the rebellious rocker princess. From a metallic jacket to edgy accessories (in that royal-yet-rock 'n' roll shade of purple) and a slinky form-fitting body suit, this affordable head-to-toe look will have you channeling your inner monarch. Rebellious never looked so regal.
