From House to Howser: Our favourite TV doctors ever

Since the very first medical drama, City Hospital, aired in 1951, we’ve looked forward to weekly house calls from our favourite TV doctors. From E.R.’s handsome Dr. Doug Ross (George Clooney) to The Mindy Project’s hilarious Dr. Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling), fans can’t get enough of these smooth-talking health professionals in their scrubs, who – along with lawyers and detectives – continue to be some of the most-watched professionals on the small screen.

With gripping plot twists and life-or-death scenarios, it’s easy to become engrossed in the high-stakes world of medicine. But although they technically save lives for a living, that doesn’t mean that MD’s are immune to an untimely demise.

We'll miss you, McDreamy: Patrick Dempsey is moving on after playing Dr Shepherd for 11 series

Grey’s Anatomy fans are still reeling after Dr. Derek Shepherd, also known as “McDreamy,” died in a car accident last month after entrancing viewers with his huge heart and second-to-none surgical skills for 11 seasons.

Creator Shonda Rimes paid tribute to the beloved heartthrob, saying: “Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character – for Meredith [his wife on the show], for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our “McDreamy.’”

Over the years, there have been hundreds of different kinds of physicians and specialists portrayed for our viewing pleasure. From Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman – played by the inimitable Jane Seymour – to chuckly Dr. Hibbert on The Simpsons, it seems no era nor area of medicine has gone unnoticed in Hollywood.

To celebrate National Doctor’s Month this May, Hello! has just what the doctor ordered – a list of the biggest small-screen doctors (stat!).
