Jake Gyllenhaal talks 'Southpaw' at the Toronto premiere with Rachel McAdams

Jake Gyllenhaal sees boxing in a whole new light these days. The actor and Canadian beauty Rachel McAdams star in Southpaw, a harrowing drama that follows one heavyweight's journey through fame, tragedy and redemption. On the red carpet to premiere the Antoine Fuqua-directed drama in Toronto, the charming actor looked dashing in a navy double-breasted suit.

While shooting the film, this suit would never have fit. Through a gruelling regimen that completely transformed Jake's body, he piled on muscle and got into the head of prized fighter Billy "The Great" Hope.

"In the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, I was in rapture for the first four rounds, just watching technique and mind work," the 34-year-old told reporters on the red carpet. "And I think you look for minutiae in a fight more, and that's what I do now more so than just 'oh what punch is gonna get thrown and someone's gonna get knocked out.'"

Rachel and Jake shared a chuckle during the screening.

Fighting aside, family takes a central role in the heart-wrenching film, in which Rachel plays Maureen Hope, Billy's wife. Jake chose his inspiration accordingly.

"The motivating fighter for me for this movie was Miguel Cotto. It was Miguel that was so devoted to his family and has been through so many tough times, even in the ring, so many odd things that have happened to him."

And after the physical and emotional toll of filming Southpaw had come to a close, and Jake could set aside his rigid regimen, he tells Hello! the one thing he wanted to do: "Not train!"

Rachel, who was greeted by Jake with a hug, was radiant in a fuchsia sleeveless Christian Dior gown, which shimmered as she made her way down the red carpet. The 36-year-old, who was recently linked to True Detective costar and fellow Canadian Taylor Kitsch, paired the gown with dangling Cartier pearl-and-diamond earrings, bee stung lips and her short bob in a soft wave. The glamorous appearance comes just weeks after the passionate actress attended a Greenpeace protest in Vancouver.
