Queen Elizabeth’s wedding recreated for new series ‘The Crown’

Nearly 68 years have passed since the world watched then- Princess Elizabeth of York say ‘I do’ to her prince charming, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. Now, their special day is being recreated for Netflix’s new 10-part series, The Crown.

Based on the Peter Morgan-penned play The Audience, for which Helen Mirren won a Tony award for her performance as The Queen, The Crown examines the various relationships Her Majesty has had with the twelve prime minsters that have held office during her six-decade-long (and counting) reign as head of the monarchy.

In these new photos from the set of the massive production, Wolf Hall actress Claire Foy steps out as Elizabeth II, dressed in a replica of the Norman Hartwell-designed gown the Queen wore on her wedding day in 1947. Doctor Who’s Matt Smith plays Prince Philip, with John Lithgow rounding out the cast as Winston Churchill.

It appears no detail was left undone. Cambridgeshire’s Ely Cathedral is the perfect stand-in for the magical Westminster Abbey and the black-and-gold coach is the spitting image of the royal family’s State coach, which transported the princess and her father, King George VI, to the ceremony. Waiting for the bride outside the abbey are Elizabeth’s bridal party, which included her younger sister, Princess Margaret.

The biographical series is set to stream on Netflix in 2016.
