Billy Dee Williams excited for Fan Expo Canada: 'I always enjoy parodying myself'

It’s that oh-so-glorious time of year again when Toronto is overtaken by a who's who of film and television stars from the worlds of comic books, fantasy and sci-fi – and this year is no exception. To mark 21 exciting years, Fan Expo Canada has rounded up a number of fan favourites, like The X-FilesGillian Anderson, Harry Potter’s Tom Felton and Star Wars’ Billy Dee Williams, who chatted with Hello! about his upcoming Canadian appearance.

Though fans may be disappointed by Billy’s report that he will not be in the newest addition to the Star Wars series, they can take heart in knowing that his character will continue to live on. “I always enjoy parodying myself,” he explains when asked about lending his voice to the vastly popular The Lego Movie, and as a result he always welcomes animated opportunities, almost as enthusiastically as he welcomed the chance to attend the Toronto Fan Expo.

I like Canada – the restaurants in particular. I always enjoy coming up there,” shares the actor, who’s going to have a jam-packed schedule during his visit. Not only will the man who famously brought Lando Calrissian to life be meeting and mingling with fans at the Expo, he’ll also be showing off some of his artwork. “I’m having an exhibition of my paintings at the Liss Gallery in Yorkville,” he says modestly. Billy describes his works as “primarily a combination of music and observations.” (RSVP to get your name on the gallery’s guest list and catch him in person on Sept. 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.)

Hosted at Toronto’s Metro Convention Centre from Sept. 3 to Sept. 6, the wildly popular expo is filled with endless attractions – think autograph sessions, celebrity photo opportunities, after parties, pre-screenings and script readings. This year’s event is guaranteed to be non-stop fun for fans and stars alike. Tickets are available online or at the on-site box office.
