Picture it: Miami, 1985. Sophia Petrillo moves in with her daughter, Dorothy, and together with friends Blanche and Rose the women became one of our favourite sharp-tongued TV squads. Now, we’re celebrating the Golden Girls’ 30th anniversary with a look back at some of the series’ best quotes.
After seven seasons filled with Sophia’s wisecracks and sassy one-liners from Blanche, we couldn’t let the milestone pass us by without singing the ladies’ praises. For the countless laughs and memorable moments they inspired, we say, “Thank you for being a friend!”
The Sicily-born matriarch (played by Estelle Getty) always had plenty of tales to tell about her childhood in Italy. Despite how much she cared about her roommates, she never held back when there was an opportunity for a stinging observation.
“Want a glass of water to wash down your foot?”
“Have I given you any indication at all that I care?”
“I always wondered why blessings wore disguises. If I were a blessing, I’d run around naked!”
“People waste their time pondering whether a glass is half empty or half full. Me, I just drink whatever’s in the glass.”
The apple didn’t fall from the tree when it came to Sophia’s no-nonsense daughter. No one delivered a sarcastic zinger or insult quite like Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur).
“[I’m going] to get ice cream or commit a felony. I’ll decide in the car.”
“I could vomit just looking at you.”
Stan: “Where am I supposed to sleep?”
Dorothy: “On the floor, like any dog.”
“Go to sleep, sweetheart. Pray for brains.”
Men were putty in her hands, and the show’s southern belle (played by Rue McClanahan) was always more than happy to share the details of her love life with her gal pals - whether they wanted to hear it or not.
“I’m from the South. Flirting is part of my heritage.”
Rose: “Blanche, what else is there besides
love and kindness?”
Blanche: “How about fame and fortune?”
“Don’t you ever get a nosebleed from taking the high road all the time?”
“I swear with God as my witness, I will never pick up another man!…in a library…on a Saturday…unless he’s cute…and drives a nice car…Amen.”
Rose Nylund (Betty White) always saw the world through rose-coloured glasses. This kind-hearted character kept audiences in stitches with her naïve observations, while she schooled her pals in her many hometown customs.
“Back in St. Olaf…”
Blanche: “What a waste, Rose Nylund in New
Rose: “It’s going to be a great trip, you wait and see…I’m going to get to see the big potato!”
Dorothy: “Wait. You’re using Rose as a
Rose: “I know what I’m doing. Every Thursday I watch LA Law.”
“Doctors don’t know everything, Dorothy. They think they do but they don’t. I mean after all Dr. Seuss was a doctor too.”
