2016 Golden Globes: All the nominees

Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet are among the list of stars who received an early phone call this morning informing them that they received a well-deserved Golden Globe nomination. The annual bash honours the best-of-the-best in film and television, and the 73rd edition of the show is overflowing with some of Hollywood's finest talents. Last year's award season darling, Eddie Redmayne, looks to sweep the podium again, having racked up phenomenal reviews for his performance in The Danish Girl. He faces tough competition for best actor, with Will Smith (Concussion), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) Bryan Cranston (Trumbo) and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) vying for the title. Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Rooney Mara (Carol) Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) were short-listed for best actress in a motion picture, drama.

Some of the notable nominees from the small screen include: Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder), Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent), Aziz Ansari (Master of None), Jamie Lee Curtis (Scream Queens), Taraji P. Henson (Empire) and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (Veep).

Globes vet Idris Elba (Luther and Beasts of No Nation) scored two more nominations while both Amy Schumer and Lady Gaga nabbed their first for their work in Trainwreck and American Horror Story: Hotel, respectively.

The Golden Globes will be handed out on Jan. 10, live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Comedian Ricky Gervais will stir things up as host for the fourth time, while Denzel Washington will be honoured with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award for his "outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment."
