James Corden gives hitchhiker Chris Martin a ride to the Super Bowl in Carpool Karaoke

When resorting to hitchhiking, Chris Martin discovered that the best-case scenario is to be picked up by James Corden! In a new skit, the Late Late Show host happened upon the Coldplay frontman, who was hitching a ride to his headlining gig at the Super Bowl, and the two engaged in a round of Carpool Karaoke.

The father of two admits he is nervous about performing at the game, which drew in a record average audience of 114.4 million viewers in 2015. James doesn't help to calm Chris's nerves, telling him he will struggle to beat Bruno Mars's Super Bowl performance from 2014.

"No one will ever come close to doing what he did at that Super Bowl halftime show. It will be very difficult for anyone to match that."

"Just drop me off here," Chris joked. "I've got some thinking to do."

It isn't long before the pair break into renditions of some of Coldplay's biggest hits, including Yellow, Adventure of a Lifetime and Viva La Vida. The pair also sing to David Bowie's Heroes, and it appears James could land a job as a backing singer for Coldplay should he ever want to, after impressing Chris with his vocals.

"You're such a good harmonizer, man," Chris told James as he gave him a high-five.

The singer will perform with Coldplay at the Super Bowl halftime show.

The pair appear to get on well during the 400-mile journey to San Francisco, and after James becomes tired they retire to a motel to bed down for the night. All doesn't go to plan when they discover James's car has been stolen overnight, leading them to complete their epic journey to the Levi's Stadium on a tandem bicycle.

Coldplay have promised to "give it everything we have" during their performance on Sunday night, and have already confirmed that Beyoncé will make an appearance during their set.

Chris recently revealed he has been getting some pep talks from his 11-year-old daughter, Apple, ahead of the performance. "She said, 'How are you feeling about the Super Bowl?' I said, 'Of course, we're a little nervous,'" Chris recalled to CBS. "She said to me, 'Dad, the worst that could happen is that you'll get turned into a meme, and after a month or so people will just forget!"
