6 things you need to know about the 2017 Golden Globes

By Sharnaz Shahid

The start of a new year means it's time for award season! The pre-Oscar buzz begins with the Golden Globes, and this year's extravaganza is already upon us, with the ceremony taking place on Sunday (Jan. 8). Here's everything you need to know about the show so far, including the all-important nominations.

Where and when?
The 74th Golden Globes ceremony will be hosted at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday 8th January at 8pm ET/5pm PT.

Who's hosting?
The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon is set to host the Golden Globes for the first time. The 42-year-old will be taking over from previous host Ricky Gervais, who has been at the helm of the awards night four times. "I'm so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes in January," Jimmy tweeted back in August. "And I'm really looking forward to spending time with the Hollywood Foreign Press before Donald Trump has them all deported."

Guest presenters
The likes of Ben Affleck and Jessica Chastain will be handing out some of the notorious statuettes at the Hollywood bash. Other confirmed presenters include Steve Carell, Priyanka Chopra, Matt Damon, Eddie Redmayne, Zoe Saldana and Reese Witherspoon.

Making first-time history
It's a big night for Ryan Reynolds. Not only has he received his first ever Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Deadpool, but the 2016 film is also the first live-action superhero movie to be nominated in a best motion picture category.

Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree
This year's Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award honoree will be Meryl Streep. The actress is being celebrated for her "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment". The 67-year-old star has received 30 Golden Globe nominations in her career, and has won eight - the record number of Golden Globe wins - thanks to her roles in Sophie's Choice (1982), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Julie & Julia (2009) and The Iron Lady (2010).
