80 years of Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot, plus 8 modern-day bombshells

By Clare Douglas

Knowing glances and a breed of allure that is both sweet and sultry make Hollywood’s bombshells the heartbreakers that they are, ever since flapper Louise Brooks silently acted her way into stardom in the 1920s.

This month, two of the founding members of this class of beauties - Sophia Loren (September 20) and Brigitte Bardot (September 28) – are marking their milestone 80th birthdays and looking as gorgeous as ever.

Born in Italy, Sophia began acting at the age of 14 and by age 20 she had landed a five-film contract with Paramount Pictures. The star of notable films like Arabesque and Five Miles to Midnight captured her first Oscar in 1962 for her leading role in La ciociara.

When it came to her looks, Sophia famously said, “Sex appeal is fifty percent what you've got and fifty percent what people think you've got!

With her signature cat eye, voluminous blonde locks and enviable curves, French beauty Brigitte Bardot defined an era of gorgeousness that has yet to be matched. A bombshell in every sense of the word, Brigitte starred in more than 50 films, graced the covers of fashion magazines worldwide and passionately fought for animals rights.

In honour of their special days, here are the bombshells of today who are following in Sophia and Brigitte’s footsteps by carrying the title with style, substance, confidence – and of course, a dash of sass.
