Hairstyling 101: 6 products and celebrity stylist tips to use them

While we don't have the expertise of a celebrity hairstylist when taming our own manes, using the right products can go a long way in smoothing out the styling kinks. Pared-down coiffures, like a simple blowout (think: the Duchess of Cambridge, nee Kate Middleton), require a very different degree of hold than a sleek ponytail a la Gigi Hadid. We've rounded up professional tips and must-try tools for every style you might want to try this summer.

A few spritzes of a lightweight hairspray or finishing spray is ideal to bolster a simple style – such as the Duchess of Cambridge’s classic blowout or Kerry Washington’s flat-iron look – without leaving a stiff film. “Mist your brush with a lighthold spray and comb it through your hair to eliminate frizz,” celebrity hairstylist Harry Josh tells Hello! Choose a shine-boosting formula to give hair luminosity and hold the bottle 30 cm away from your hair when spraying. “Even the finest mist will give you a crunchy slick if you spray too close,” say Harry.

Textured loose waves with a slept-in appeal is a go-to style both on and off the red carpet. “Choose a firm hold hairspray with volumizing properties to preserve curls without weighing hair down,” says Harry. To get Emma Stone’s look, Harry recommends curling one-inch sections of hair around the barrel of a curling iron, winding hair away from the face. “Shake out the curls, flip your head over and mist the underside for added volume.” For Jennifer Lawrence’s chignon, loosely pull hair back into a low bun, secure with bobby pins and set with a final mist of hairspray.

STRONG HOLD

A super-sleek updo requires a strong hold hairspray to eliminate fly-aways and create a glossy, long-lasting look. To get Katie Holmes’s finger wave style or Gigi Hadid’s smooth ponytail, choose a formula with shaping polymers to help mould hair. “Once you’re happy with your style, spray hairspray into your hands and run your hands over hair instead of misting directly on your head,” says Harry. This reduces the amount of product but lets you coat your hair evenly and create a high-shine finish.
