Joe Manganiello's 'extremely serious' appendicitis lands him in the hospital

Joe Manganiello is fighting a serious case of appendicitis, one that has landed him in the hospital. Due to his condition, the 39-year-old star has dropped out of an upcoming role on the TV drama Six, and TMZ reports that he's had to undergo surgery.

Sources close to the actor told TMZ that Joe went into the hospital a few days ago to have his appendix removed, with one saying that doctors were alarmed to discover that Joe's appendix had ruptured. The Magic Mike XXL star is now said to be recovering in hospital.

It was previously suggested that Joe was forced to drop out of the History Channel project because of a pre-existing condition, which was believed to be due to an old bicep injury which occurred when he tore the muscle during filming of Magic Mike.

Production has now been delayed on the television programme while his role is recast, a rep for the History Channel confirmed to Us Weekly.

The eight-part military mini-series follows a Navy SEAL Team, whose mission to eliminate a Taliban leader in Afghanistan goes awry when they uncover a US citizen working with the terrorists. Magic Mike star Joe had been cast as the squad's leader, Rip Taggart.

Prior to working on the miniseries, Joe was busy shooting the upcoming comedy Drunk Parents, in which he stars alongside Salma Hayek, Alec Baldwin and Bridget Moynahan.

The True Blood actor – who marriedModern Family's Sofia Vergara in November – also recently showed off his comedic chops in Pee-Wee's Big Holiday, which hit Netflix in March.
