Celine Dion steps back from the spotlight to focus on husband René

“For the first time in my life, I was in charge. I had to be his support and strength. I made sure we were going to embrace life,” Celine Dion said when her husband, René Angélil, went through his first ordeal with cancer 15 years ago.

Surely that philosophy is top of mind as it’s been revealed the Grammy award-winner is taking time off of work once again to be by her husband’s side. She is on an indefinite hiatus from both her Las Vegas show, Celine, and has cancelled her upcoming fall Asia tour.

“I want to devote every ounce of my strength and energy to my husband’s healing and, to do so, it’s important for me to dedicate this time to him and to our children,” said the mother of three.

Insiders tell Hello! Canada that just six weeks ago the couple were in full planning mode for her tour and intended to continue her run at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace until 2019.

So what changed? “We all thought in Las Vegas that René was making a great recovery from the surgery back in December. [But] one can only assume that Celine’s decision is made because his health has either deteriorated again or he’s slipped back,” says the couple’s friend, celebrity reporter Robin Leach.

As her time off is open-ended, one can only guess when Celine will return to work. The team at Caesars Palace, meanwhile, has been nothing but supportive. “We wish both her and René a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with them and their family and we look forward to Celine’s return,” they said in a statement.

Celine, too, is staying positive. “Life is good, but no one knows for how long,” she has reportedly told friends. “That’s why at the start of every single day, I tell him that I love him. He is still my best friend, and I trust my life to him.”
