The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes lead 2015 MMVA nominations

He’s certainly earned it! Toronto-born singer The Weeknd, leads the 2015 MuchMusic Video Awards (MMVA) nominations with six nods, followed by 16-year-old pop-star Shawn Mendes with four nominations.

The Weeknd’s hit, “Earned It,” is up for Best Pop Video, which isn't surprising as the steamy song (which boasts a risqué, burlesque-themed video) was featured on the wildly popular Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack.

The 25-year-old singer’s other single, “Often,” will vie for Video of the Year along with Arcade Fire’s “We Exist,” Grimes's “Go” (featuring Blood Diamonds), Kiesza’s “Giant In My Heart,” and Majid Jordan’s “Her.”

11 memorable MMVA moments

Both The Weeknd and Shawn have already been tapped to perform at the annual street bash, along with Jason DeRulo, Nick Jonas and Ed Sheeran, who is co-hosting the televised event.

Presenters have yet to be announced, but judging from last year’s A-list attendees – including cohosts Kendall and Kylie Jenner, presenters Chloë Grace Moretz, Jena Malone and Kellan Lutz, and performers Ariana Grande and Hedley – the outdoor fête is guaranteed to be a star-studded one.

In the weeks leading up to the event, fans are asked to go online to cast their vote for the three Fan Fave awards: Fave Video of the Year, Fan Fave Artist/Group and Fan Fave International Artist/Group.

Last year, on-again, off-again couple Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez took home two of the coveted fan-voted wins – Justin for Your Fave Artist and Selena for Your Fave International Artist. Justin later took to Twitter to show his appreciation, writing: “Thank you #beliebers. I love you.”

Unconventional, unstuffy and unscripted, the MMVAs are one of the most entertaining (and wholly Canadian) awards shows of the summer season.

Since making its debut 25 years ago in 1990, the "for-the-fans" event has catapulted our homegrown talent to worldwide fame, while also drawing international stars to the studio-less, open-air street party, held on downtown Toronto’s historic Queen Street West.

It airs live on June 21 on MuchMusic.
