Pan Am Games’ organizers have confirmed that American rapper Kanye West will join Pitbull and Toronto-native Serena Ryder for an out-of-this-world musical conclusion to the exciting sporting event that has captivated the country since it kicked off on July 10.
Despite the excitement of some over the A-list performance, others are less than pleased that an American has been tapped to headline. Thousands have signed various petitions, the largest of which is organized by Allen Simans, who questions the use of foreign talent to anchor the ceremonies.
"It would only be just to ask a proud Torontonian (or even a Canadian for that matter) in the music industry to perform, such as Drake, Walk off the Earth, Feist, Metric, Shania Twain, deadmau5, Crystal Castles, Zeds Dead, The Weeknd, Peaches, K'naan, and many many more!"
Word of Kanye’s performance spread quickly on social media after NBA star Anthony Bennett tweeted that he ‘overheard’ plans to have the rapper take the stage at the televised closing ceremonies. The Minnesota Timberwolves’ forward is in Toronto competing on Team Canada’s men’s basketball team.
There has been no confirmation that Kanye’s wife, Kim Kardashian, will join her husband in Canada. The TV personality is currently pregnant with the couple’s second child, a son, who is due to arrive later this year.
The 34-year-old star recently revealed that she is preparing daughter North, 2, for her role as a big sister. “I don't know if North really understands she's getting a baby brother yet. We read books at night with stories about big sisters, and baby brothers, families," Kim told MailOnline. The dedicated mother also revealed that she plans to follow big sister Kourtney’s lead by bringing North to the hospital to meet her little brother. “That’s what Kourtney did with her kids so I’ll take advice from her."
Kanye's appearance at the Pan Am Games will be his second performance in Canada this month. On July 12, the 38-year-old delivered a well-recieved concert to more than 25,000 fans at Ottawa's annual Bluesfest music festival.
