The Weeknd mingles with 'friend and PM' Justin Trudeau in Washington

The Weeknd has performed at the GRAMMYs and the Victoria's Secret fashion show and was nominated for an Oscar, but it seems the Scarborough-born singer achieved a new high when he attended a Canada 2020 event in Washington with his "friend and PM" Justin Trudeau. In addition to the reception, the Prime Minister, wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau and their three children are in the US to attend an historic state dinner with President Obama.

The Weeknd shared a photo with Justin from Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum on Twitter, where both men were wearing slim black suits and black skinny ties. He captioned the snap "thank you for inviting me to this historical evening. honor to witness this moment my friend and PM @JustinTrudeau."

The "Can't Feel My Face" singer was also pictured standing beside Sophie as the two listened as Justin addressed the crowd of ambassadors, senators and members of the Obama administration. She looked elegant in a pretty floral jacket and orange clutch by Canadian brand Ela as she watched her husband intently.

“The Weeknd personifies the creative and dynamic spirit of the Canadian arts community,” Canada 2020 co-founder Tom Pitfield said of the artist. The 26-year-old singer is in Washington hot on the heels of his recent Oscar performance, during which he sang his Fifty Shades of Grey hit "Earned It," which was nominated for Best Original Song.

Canada's newly elected prime minister has also had an eventful year, visiting the Queen at Buckingham Palace, appearing on the cover of Vogue, vacationing in a luxe Caribbean resort and speaking to Laura Logan for a 60 Minutes segment. He will now mark a new milestone by meeting with President Obama on Thursday (Mar. 10), having arrived in Washington on Wednesday with Sophie and kids Xavier, 8, Ella-Grace, 7, and two-year-old Hadrien in tow.

Thursday evening the couple will attend a state dinner at the White House, of which the President has only hosted 10 during his two terms.
