Listen to this: New singles from Justin Bieber and Calvin Harris

By Nicholas Jennings

Collaborations are often the key to making beautiful music, but finding the right partner in the recording studio is every bit as tricky as discovering the perfect romantic match. This week’s top songs come from two partnerships that have already proven fruitful, one featuring Justin Bieber and the other from the man who gave Rihanna her biggest hit.

Major Lazer, Justin Bieber and MØ: “Cold Water”
Justin teams up with the Danish singer and Diplo’s Major Lazer project on this cool composition by DJ Benny Blanco and Ed Sheeran. With its buzzy electronic production, the track has all the elements of a summer smash: catchy beat, big hooks and a memorable vocal refrain. After promising to jump in cold water to save a sinking friend or lover, Biebs and MØ repeat the reassuring phrases “I won’t let go” and “I’ll be your lifeline tonight.”

Diplo and Justin’s previous collaboration, “Where Are Ü Now,” was a GRAMMY-winning hit, so it’s no wonder that the Canadian star is excitedly promoting the new joint effort via Twitter.

John Newman: “Olé”
Another successful partnership involves English singer John Newman and Scottish songwriter-producer Calvin Harris, who was responsible for Rihanna’s mega-hit “We Found Love.” Newman and Harris previously topped the U.K. charts with “I’m Not Alone.” This time around, Newman sings Harris’ bubbling breakup song that some have suggested targets Harris’ ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift and her new boyfriend, actor Tom Hiddleston. Judge for yourself with these lyrics: “I see online that you've begun to be/A good girl and take trips with your boyfriend/Being attentive, continue to pretend.”

Taylor’s fans have certainly been swift to interpret the percolating “Olé” as proof that Calvin is moving on from his ex.
