Listen to this: New singles from Kygo, Ellie Goulding and Hailee Steinfeld

Certain themes in pop songs never go out of fashion. When it comes to romantic numbers, young love or that first heavy crush is a tried-and-true topic. Think Donny Osmond singing “Puppy Love,” Taylor Swift opining “You Belong to Me” or Justin Bieber full of butterflies on “One Time.” A less universal but increasingly popular subject in pop is female empowerment, thanks to the Spice Girls andBeyoncé songs like “Run the World (Girls).” Both themes are prominent in two of this week’s hot new singles.

Kygo & Ellie Goulding – “First Time”

The Norwegian DJ star’s last collaborative hit, “It Ain’t Me,” featured Selena Gomez. This time around, Kygo teams up with British pop phenom Ellie Goulding for a nostalgic look at adolescent love. “We were lovers for the first time, running all the red lights,” Ellie sings." Kygo’s slowly building beats and Ellie’s sultry vocals provides the perfect platform for this catchy tale about young lovers on a “fast ride.”

Kygo and Ellie, clearly giddy about their fresh collab, both posted news about the single on their respective Instagram and Twitter accounts. Ellie’s Twitter feed included this particularly happy photo of her and Kygo.

Hailee Steinfeld – “Most Girls”

The 20-year-old star is all about girl power in her follow up tune to 2016's massive hit "Love Myself." “Most girls are smart and strong and beautiful/most girls work hard, go far, we are unstoppable.” Her song makes it clear that everyone is different and differences are worth celebrating. Over club-friendly beats, Hailee delivers an infectious female empowerment message.

When Spotify asked her to compile a “Teen Party” playlist, Hailee obliged and tweeted a video showing her excitement.
