Listen to this: New singles from Miley Cyrus and Harry Styles

By Nicholas Jennings

They’re both just in their early 20s, but are already veterans of pop music. The daughter of country star Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley became a teen idol in the TV series Hannah Montana before remaking herself as a provocative singer of hit albums like Bangerz and such chart-topping songs as “Wrecking Ball.” Now 24, she has her first single out in four years and admits it’s about a significant man in her life. Harry Styles, 23, is a member of the British boy band One Direction and has just released his debut album and there’s much speculation about the woman behind his current single.

Miley Cyrus - “Malibu”

A sunny pop-rock number, Miley’s new single finds her transitioning once again—this time away from her wild twerking ways and sounding more like a mature singer-songwriter. Over a snappy guitar riff, Miley offers clearly love-struck lyrics. “It’s a brand new start,” she sings, “and I wanna thank you with all of my heart.” Miley has made no secret of the fact that her summery song is all about her fiancé Liam Hemsworth.

Miley posted news about “Malibu” on her Twitter feed along with a photo of herself reclining on the grass looking blissfully happy. She also linked to Liam’s Twitter page right below the caption.

Harry Styles - “Carolina”

Upbeat and bluesy, Harry’s latest single has many fans assuming it’s a reference to the former 1D heartthrob’s brief relationship with TV presenter, Caroline Flack. She's got a book for every situation,” Harry sings, “Gets into parties without invitations.”

Other Harry followers have guessed that another of his album tracks, “Ever Since New York,” deals with Taylor Swift, who he briefly dated. Harry’s not commenting on the subject matter of either song, choosing instead to tweet about how happy he is to be on the cover of Rolling Stone.
