See the commemorative coin released for the Queen's 90th birthday

The Royal Mint will honour the Queen's 90th birthday with a commemorative £5 coin, which has just been released. Artist and sculptor Christopher Hobbs is responsible for the lovely design after spending three months perfecting the look and finally submitting for the Queen's approval.

It is available in a variety of finishes including silver, gold and platinum gold, with prices ranging up to $9,300 for a rare platinum edition collector's coin.

The commemorative coin features a prominent number 90 and a garland of nine roses – one for each of the Queen's decades. It also incorporates a crown and a wreath of laurel leaves with four points to symbolise England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

90 REASONS TO SALUTE THE QUEEN

The Royal Mint also created coins to mark Her Majesty's 70th and 80th birthdays, along with the Queen's record reign in September 2015.

Anne Jessopp, of the Royal Mint, said: "Coins produced to celebrate the Queen becoming Britain's longest reigning monarch in 2015 were very well received, with some ranges selling out completely.

"We anticipate that coins created for Her Majesty's 90th birthday will prove equally popular with members of the public wishing to mark this historic occasion."

THE QUEEN'S MOST UNFOGETTABLE MOMENTS WITH ANIMALS

Speaking about his design, Christopher Hobbs said: "My design for Her Majesty's 90th birthday coin collection was inspired by the heraldic rose at the Queen's love of flowers.

"The central 'EIIR' is surrounded by a classical wreath of celebration. I have tried to make the roses more natural than heraldic, each one different from the other."

The Queen turns 90 on 21 April, and will mark her day by carrying out two engagements in Windsor with the Duke of Edinburgh. As well as unveiling a plaque marking The Queen's Walkway, Her Majesty will also be joined by Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall for a beacon lighting ceremony to celebrate her milestone day.
