Zara Tindall won't be competing in the Rio Olympics

Zara Tindall won't be heading to Rio this summer as the royal missed out on a place on the eventing team for Great Britain. The Queen's granddaughter was not included on the long list for the 2016 Olympics team despite becoming the first royal to win a medal when she took the silver at London 2012.

Zara – who was unable to take part in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics because of injuries to her horse - did achieve the Olympic qualification mark riding High Kingdom last month at the Badminton Horse Trails. It is thought that concerns about her horse's fitness contributed to her exclusion, however.

A spokesperson for the 35-year-old told the Telegraph: "Like anybody else, Zara really wanted to represent her country, but I'm sure she also wanted to make sure that the best team goes to Rio."

GB named 10 athletes in their list this week, and will make their final selection by 18 July. Three of Zara's four 2012 team-mates – Tina Cook, William Fox-Pitt and Nicola Wilson – have made the shortlist.

Zara is an accomplished rider; she won the Eventing World Championships in 2006, and that same year was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Since winning silver in London, Zara has become a first-time mother, welcoming daughter Mia with husband Mike Tindall in January 2014.

Mia and dad Mike are often pictured supporting Zara at her equestrian events, and just a few days ago, the adorable two-year-old stole the show as she attended the Maserati Royal Charity Polo Trophy match, where she was doted on by both Prince William and Prince Harry as she played around on the sidelines.
